Operating since 2000, when it launched its first Academy serving 25 boys, Clontarf has expanded to serve approximately 4,700 participants across 84 schools in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. The Foundation addresses the critical challenge that early experiences of failure, combined with socioeconomic disadvantage, often lead to school disengagement, alienation, and adverse social outcomes. Clontarf's distinctive model leverages the existing passion Aboriginal boys have for Australian Rules Football and Rugby League as a vehicle to attract and retain students in school while building self-esteem and confidence. The organization operates a network of football academies established through partnerships with local schools, where any enrolled Aboriginal male student is eligible to participate. Full-time, locally based Clontarf staff provide mentoring and counseling on behavioral and lifestyle issues while schools deliver academic instruction, creating an integrated support system.
