The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is a voluntary organisation founded by six mothers in 1964 as the Nursing Mothers' Association (NMAA). It changed its name in 2001. The ABA encourages and support mothers who would like to breastfeed their babies, while creating in the community an awareness of the importance of human milk. Most of ABA's work is carried out by trained volunteers over the 'phone, online and in the community. Mothers who have breastfed their own children complete their Certificate IV in Breastfeeding Education or equivalent through the Association and then volunteer to assist other mothers. Many services are available free of charge and mothers pay a small membership fee to access the full range of services. The Association is supported by health authorities and specialists in infant and child health and nutrition, including a panel of distinguished honorary advisers. ABA is recognised internationally as a source of accurate information about breastfeeding management and research. With the support of its Lactation Resource Centre (LRC), the ABA provides information to its counsellors and educates the wider community, from preschools to universities and professional organisations. ABA's voluntary breastfeeding counsellors are experienced mothers who have completed an intensive training programme and have successfully breastfed their own children. They are bound by a code of ethics and offer their support over the telephone, in person and through a wide range of literature. The ABA's services include: A 24-hour Breastfeeding Helpline that answers more than 80,000 calls per year Email counselling Breastfeeding Education Classes for expectant parents A comprehensive website where people can learn about breastfeeding and the ABA's activities Local support groups where mothers can meet new friends and share information and experiences A member magazine and e-newsletters Breast pump hire (discounted for members) Community education activities such as talks to schools, hospitals and ...
