Athens-Clarke County Police say the driver of a car involved in a fatal hit and run is now is custody. Police say 29-year old Donterris Gresham turned himself in at the Clarke County Jail Wednesday. They say Gresham was driving a Honda Accord that struck 20-year-old UGA student Ariana Zarse as she crossed Broad Street near Foundry Street shortly af... ter midnight Saturday, October 9th. Zarse was taken to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries. The Clarke County Board of Education is set to debate a proposed vaccine mandate for school district staff at their voting meeting tonight. The proposed policy would require all employees to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine, with exceptions for medical and religious reasons. Employees who dont have the vaccine, for whatever reason, would have to undergo PCR testing once a week and follow social distancing and other public health guidelines. The city of Winterville is inviting members of the community and others to the dedication of a new park. Mayor Dodd Ferrell says Chandler Park is named in honor of a former long-time city employee and resident loss during the pandemic. The nations largest health philanthropy says more than two million adults in the United States, including some 275,000 here in Georgia, dont have health insurance due to the Medicaid Coverage Gap. Income is too low to make them eligible for the ACA Marketplace plan, so they end up sort of in a gap where they dont have enough money to be able to afford health insurance, theyre not getting it from a job and theyre not eligible for Medicaid either. The United Way of Northeast Georgia is giving out hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding to 30 different programs next year.
