Words & Numbers would like to thank the Baltimore Book Bank for finding a home for thousands of books we recently donated. As avowed bibliophiles, we knew they couldn't be thrown away, so we were relieved when, just the other day, they found a new home at the Book Bank, which is part of the Baltimore Reads program. Founded in 2000, Baltimore Reads... is a 501(c) non-profit whose mission is to improve the quality of life for educationally disadvantaged adults, children and families by teaching basic reading, writing, mathematics, and employment readiness. The Book Bank was created 4 years later with the mission of collecting, housing, and distributing books for free, and each year the bank manages to distribute thousands of books to people who need them. And in case you're wondering where Baltimore received its popular slogan""The City that Reads""we can credit Kurt Schmoke's 2000 inaugural address for the phrase. Schmoke wasn't so much describing the city, since rates of illiteracy were high when he assumed office, but rather tracing the outlines of a Baltimore he envisioned. The final destination of our books will be teachers, libraries, families, churches, Head Start programs, and shelters throughout Baltimore City and County. I imagine that I speak for everyone in the Words & Numbers office"an assortment of editors, writers, techies, and project managers"when I say that books collecting dust is an opportunity for knowledge wasted.
