Celebrating 50 Years of Public Radio: On Monday, October 7, 1968, EKU President Robert Martin turned on WEKU's new 50,000 watt transmitter from the studios in the Donovan Building on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. In 1970, WEKU joined 89 other public radio stations as charter members of a new educational radio network known... as National Public Radio. Today, WEKU broadcasts on nine FM stations in Central and Eastern Kentucky reaching more than 1.5 million residents.
