The Soup Kitchen

The Society is a registered non-profit, non-denominational charity. In the early 1980's, there were no organizations in Victoria dedicated to feeding the hungry. After watching two men searching for food in a dumpster, Murray and Edna Black decided to form the 9-10 Club Serving Soup to the Hungry. Meal services started on Friday, November 12, 1982.... It is the oldest, completely volunteer-run food resource for the hungry in Victoria. Open Monday to Friday, by 8:00 am to 10:00 am, including all holidays. Current bagged meal menu includes a protein rich, hearty soup made fresh every day, sandwich, hard-boiled egg, two pieces of fruit, sweets - along with coffee, tea and water. Safe, community-oriented haven. Over 80 volunteers, with the exception of a caretaker who receives a modest honorarium, staff the kitchen. A board of directors meets monthly and oversees operations. The annual budget is currently about $150,000. St. Andrew's Cathedral has been our landlord since we began - generously provides space for minimal rent.
