Description:

The Fathering Project PKH was founded in May 2015. It has been established to specifically tackle the problems of child substance abuse, suicide and self-harm. Through this initiative, the Fathering Project will undertake presentations and courses in schools, workplaces and community groups to educate and provide strategies to fathers and children to create awareness around the topics of child substance abuse, suicide and self-harm. Associate Professor Lisa Wood and researcher Estee Lambin believe that fathers can help foster "secure exploration" of challenging and unknown situations and this can have a lasting impact through childhood. Fathers and father figures can play a very big role in preventing children from drug and alcohol exploitation. They can also help with a child's self-esteem which will then further prevent child suicide and self-harm. The Fathering Project PKH programs primarily aim at working together with fathers and father figures in order to: Increase their awareness of substance abuse, suicide and self-harm in relation to school aged children Provide strategies to implement preventative measures to reduce the incidence of substance abuse, suicide and self-harm Provide strategies to undertake intervention where children are displaying inappropriate behaviours in these areas. The program also aims to provide awareness and intervention programs for children. We are aiming to work with schools to implement mentor and education programs to help focus on the prevention of substance abuse, suicide and self-harm amongst school children.
