The word pediatrician is derived from the Greek and means "healer of children". A pediatrician is a specialist in the medical care of infants, children and young adults. Medical school graduates must embark on an additional three to four year course of internship and residency to become a pediatrician. During this rigorous training, a prospective pediatrician cares only for children. By contrast, a family or general practitioner may only get a few months of specialized pediatric training during their residency. Treating children is very different from treating adults. A child's body is constantly changing, and pediatricians must concern themselves with caring for the whole child. A child's health today can have a profound impact on their future development.
