Sphinx Fine Art, named after the fourteenth-century B.C. sphinxes outside the Russian Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg, was founded in London by Edward Strachan and Roy Bolton in 2007. The gallery has a dual focus, Old Master paintings and drawings, from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, and Russian and Russian Orientalist paintings, from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. Edward Strachan's expertise in Russian art began while reading Soviet and Russian Studies at the School for Slavonic and East European Studies in London (UCL), and was followed by twenty years of living and collecting throughout the former USSR and St. Petersburg. Roy Bolton developed his expertise writing as an arts columnist whilst in Oxford, before embarking on a career at the auction houses, where he spent most of the last decade heading an Old Master Pictures department at Christie's. ...Read More
