About Robeson County Library

Robeson County Library serves the people of the county through its main branch located in Lumberton, NC as well as through six satellite branches located throughout the county. These satellite branches are located in the following towns: Gilbert Patterson Memorial Library in Maxon NC, the Hector MacLean Public Library in Fairmount, Annie Hubbard McEachern Public Library in St. Pauls, Pembroke Public Library in Pembroke, Rowland Public Library in Rowland and McMillan Memorial Library in Red Springs. Robeson County is the largest county in the state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, Robeson county population was 134,168, and increase of 6.1% since 2004, when the population was 126,469. Robeson County is one of the 10% of counties in the United States where minorities make up the majority of people in the county. The Lumbee Indian Tribe is named after the Lumber River that flows through the county. The Native Americans from the Lumbee Tribe claim to be descendants of the Cheraw and related Siouan-speaking tribes. In 1956, Congress passed an act that recognized the Lumbee Tribe as Native American people. This Congressional act was limited in that it does not provide services customarily provided to federally recognized tribes through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Robeson County is in the southern part of North Carolina and boarders the state of South Carolina on one side and the North Carolina counties of Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Hoke and Scotland on the others. Robeson County has a total mass of 951 square miles. The county is named for Col. Thomas Robeson of the revolutionary war. In 1781, Col. Robeson along with 70 Patriots defeated 400 Loyalists at the Battle of Elizabethtown.
