The name Rich Hill originates from the homeland of John's grandfather Vic Troughton who grew up in Richhill, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland and immigrated to the Waikato district in the early 1994's. He became a successful and respected dairy farmer. Rich Hill Stud is now firmly established as one of New Zealand's leading thoroughbred nurseries.
