Her only question was Will I be able to see my babys face? She was 17 years old, pregnant, and blind when she was led into my clinic. Unknown to her the night before, she had high-risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy and blood was now blocking the vision in both of her eyes. I performed laser surgery, her sight returned, and shes still a patient... of mine with good vision in both eyes. Blindness from diabetes and other conditions can usually be prevented with timely treatment. However, for a number of reasons, the problems are often caught too late. Understanding and solving these problems has been my passion for the past three decades. Most people with blinding retinal diseases dont know they have a problem until long after they should have received treatment. On the other hand, some people know they are at increased risk for blindness, yet they still dont get the care they need. Why? Some dont have access to doctors, some cant take time off work, and others are worried they wont be able to pay for the visit. Some are simply afraid theyll hear us mention blindness.
