Living Classrooms Foundation is a Baltimore-Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization dedicated to disrupting cycles of poverty and strengthening communities through comprehensive education, workforce development, health and wellness programming, and violence prevention initiatives. Since its founding in 1985, the organization has served individu... als across all ages by leveraging urban, natural, and maritime resources as experiential learning environments, meeting participants where they are and equipping them with practical life and career skills. The foundation's flagship initiative, the Baltimore Target Investment Zone (TIZ), represents a strategic concentration of integrated services across a 2.5 square mile area of East Baltimore, addressing interconnected challenges including generational poverty, crime and recidivism, chronic health disparities, educational underperformance, and unemployment. The TIZ serves a population of over 40,000 residents, including 9,100 students across 18 schools and residents of more than 2,200 public housing units spanning five distinct neighborhoodsPleasant View Gardens, Perkins Homes, areas surrounding Patterson Park and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Oldtown/Middle East, Fayette Street Corridor, and McElderry Park. To operationalize this comprehensive approach, Living Classrooms Foundation has established a network of Community Hubs throughout East Baltimore, including two early childhood education centers, two workforce development centers, a public charter middle school, and three community centers.
