The lanky 13-year-old wasn't the first pick of the pickup games back then but he was willing to learn. Four years earlier, Mr. Couch started drilling kids in Dyckman Park on weekends and no... w the 6-7 Alcindor was about to learn the art of the hook shot. A legend was born on that court, one that would grow up to become the NBA's leading all-time scorer as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was the first of many Dyckman area players to attend college on a full scholarship. Others were Herbie Rayburn (Fairfield University), Patty McGrath (Manhattan College), Raymond John (Wheeling College), Wayne Wilson (Delaware State University), Michael Martin, (Cheyney University), George Paycheck (Colorado University), and Vernon "Nookie"Gibson (Hawaii). The '70s saw the advent of play in the prestigious Holcombe Rucker League and in the '80s, the program's weekend park conditioning workouts became the talk of New York City. The program now has over 200 regular participants and has indoor gym conditioning workouts at various sites around New York City. We are endorsed by members of the NBA, USA Basketball, NCAA and the New York City Public School Athletic League.
