IBEW Local 529

The IBEW represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada, and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and m... ost active and has members in so many skilled occupations. We work hard to help out communities in need, and we care about our jobs and our customers. The IBEW is comprised of eleven districts throughout the United States and Canada. Local 29 is part of the Third District which encompasses Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Within the Third District there are approximately 130,000 members, making our district one of the largest in the IBEW. The History of Local 29: The IBEW formed six different Local Unions to represent employees of the Duquesne Light Company (then part of the Philadelphia Company) in 1948. The formation of the IBEW Local Unions followed most of the same employees being members of a very active Independent Local Union. The Locals formed and dates of their charters are: Local 140 on 3/31/48, Local 142 on 4/27/48, Local 144 on 6/3/48, Local 147 on 6/17/48, Local 148 on 6/21/48 and Local 149 on 7/23/48. Local 149 represented Central Office employees of both the Duquesne Light Company and the Pittsburgh Railway Company (also then a part of the Philadelphia Company) Pittsburgh Railways was the single largest part of a Governmental takeover of several transit companies that were heading toward bankruptcy. The merger became the Port Authority of Allegheny County. In the late 1950's the IBEW formed System Council U-10 that oversaw contract negotiations and areas of common interest with the six Local Unions in dealing with Duquesne Light. On May 1, 1999, all six Local Unions and System Council U-10 merged together forming Local 29. In June 25, 2007, the IBEW officially chartered a Retirees Association for Local 29.Read More
