Immensely proud of its own history as a manufacturer of sports and Grand Prix cars in the 40s and 50s, HWM is delighted with its new association with Alfa Romeo, a stellar contemporary in a classic era of motor racing. Hersham and Walton Motors, as it was first known, was founded in 1948 by two daring and stylish racing drivers, George Abecassis and John Heath. he company immediately made its mark as a racing car manufacturer and built the Alta-engined sports car, known as the HW Alta, followed by a second car, an open-wheeler which could be raced either as a sports car or a single-seater. In 1950, Heath came up with the idea of a travelling team that could earn its keep from a busy programme of races on the Continent and three HWMs took part in an incredible twenty international events in twenty-seven weeks, across Italy, France, Belgium and Germany.
