Gospel Oak School

Gospel Oak continues to provide outstanding opportunities for developing children's physical activities. Sebastian Coe presented us with the Active Mark Gold award and we now have our all weather floodlit sports pitch. We are one of the most successful local schools in sporting competitions and yet we always ensure that every child has an opportuni... ty to represent the school. We have now employed a full-time music teacher and standards in the subject are rising rapidly. What are we trying to improve? We are continuing to focus further on improving standards in English and mathematics. We are in the middle of GO (Gospel Oak) Healthy Year that has included a range of initiatives like improving school meals and the whole dining experience, making children more health conscious, running a gardening club, and providing even more sports clubs. We have improved our music provision, including introducing two more instruments for individual tuition. Ultimately, we intend to be as well known for our music as we are for our PE and sport. How have our results changed over time? Since 2001 our results have shown a steady upward trend as we move towards our ambitious target of being in the top 10% nationally. For the second successive year assessments at the end of the Foundation Stage exceeded the national average from an overall starting point at the beginning of nursery that is well below average, a tremendous achievement. At the end of Key Stage 1 we were particularly pleased with the very high standards achieved in reading and mathematics. Results at the end of Key Stage 2 were also the best ever overall but hide the enormous progress made by individual children. Our 'value-added' factor is very high. How are we making sure that every child gets teaching to meet their individual needs? We begin from the starting point of being very proud of our rich ethnic and social mix, and being ambitious for all of our children.
