The original Kiel Auditorium was designed by St. Louis architects Louis LaBeaume and Eugene S. Klein and was renamed in 1943 to honor former St. Louis Mayor Henry W. Kiel, a prominent arts advocate who championed the development of a municipal auditorium. Throughout its history, Kiel Auditorium hosted the St. Louis Hawks professional basketball team and Saint Louis University Billikens basketball team, in addition to performances by numerous legendary entertainers.
