English For Action

Education should work to transform the quality of each persons life, the environment, the community, the whole society. Through participatory English language, childcare, and other educational programs, we link language learning, leadership development and community-building. We use innovative learning tools, such as the visual arts, theater of the oppressed and action projects to engage adults and younger learners in dialogue, reflection and collaboration. Through these processes, we strive to create transformative learning communities inside and outside the classroom, in order to effect meaningful and community-based social changed in Olneyville and the greater Providence community. We envision an organization that is a center for community building and leadership development, where learners take on leadership roles within the organization and in the community to build a future in which English for Actions learning community spreads to neighborhoods and cities across the country as a model for community-based education, leadership, and collective change. We envision an Olneyville that is economically and culturally vibrant, in which its diverse residents all enjoy socio-economic opportunities, quality education, access to health care, and the celebration of diverse cultures and traditions. Finally, we envision a participatory democracy in which people work collectively to promote social and economic justice, and in which immigrants are active and equal participants in society and politics.
