In the early 1990s, the community of Claremont developed its first Youth Master Plan through a major joint effort of the City, the school district, and many dedicated residents. The plan identified a critical need-after-school programs that would provide academic support and mentoring for Claremont's at-risk youths. To meet this need, volunteers created two nonprofit organizations: the Youth Wellness Center and the Claremont Tutorial Centers. The centers had much in common: Both targeted at-risk and low-income elementary-school students in the Claremont Unified School District. Both relied on volunteer tutors from the community. Both formed close relations with the city and the school district. Both provided stable, high-quality service from the mid-1990s on. In 2005, leaders of the two programs, acknowledging their overlapping features, merged the organizations into today's Claremont After-School Programs (CLASP). Because CLASP board members have shared their knowledge and blended their resources as a result of the merger, CLASP has grown stronger. CLASP has increased from two to five centers with more than 200 volunteer tutors currently serving about 150 students. Click here to watch our CLASP informational video.
