About Bedford County After School

A Tussey Mountain student gets help with her homework. The Bedford County After School program is part of a countywide consortium that provides free after school programming for Bedford County Students under grants through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and through cooperative agreements with the county's school districts: Bedford Area, Chestnut Ridge, Everett, Northern Bedford and Tussey Mountain and the HOPE for Hyndman Charter School. The Bedford County 21st Century Community Learning Centers Consortium, which in addition to the grades 2 to 5 program oversees a secondary program grades 6-12 called After 3, is the only one of its type in Pennsylvania to provide after school programming countywide among independent school districts. The After School Program is the elementary program for students grades 2 to 5 and in since 2011-12 is being offered at six sites - Bedford Elementary School, HOPE for Hyndman Charter School, Chestnut Ridge Middle School, Everett Elementary School, Northern Bedford County Elementary School and Saxton-Liberty Elementary School. The consortium is directed by countywide staff, including Project Director Dr. Walter Curfman. A steering committee made up of school administrators along with representatives from community-based organizations meets to oversee the projects. Since 2011-12 school year, the consortium has enrolled more than 650 Bedford County students annually; provided employment for more than 60 full and part-time staff members and provide more than 400 hours of after school programming at each of site throughout Bedford County.
