Brewerville Civic Association

The idea of establishing a Brewerville Civic Association may have been entertained perhaps for as long as Brewervillians began arriving and living in the U.S. But there are no records to indicate that any serious attempts were made at organizing such an organization until 1989, when Brewervillians from all across the United States assembled in Prov... idence, Rhode Island to undertake this noble task. The organizing meeting and elections were held on Saturday June 24, 1989 at the Holy Cross Church on Broad Street in Providence. The organizing committee was chaired by Mr. Alexander M. Massey (NY/NJ). Other members of the committee were: Mr. Ike R. Wilson, Sr. (OH/MI), Mr. Edwin Outland (RI/MA/CT), Mr. Alfred B. Curtis, Jr. (NY/NJ), Mr. Jerry C. Brown (GA/NC/SC) and Mr. Kedrick Taylor (OK/TX). Dr. Winston Thomas (a.k.a. Boikai Twe) chaired the Constitution committee along with Mrs. Yvonne Hansford, Mr. J. McCant Hayes, Jr., Mr. Ike R. Wilson, Sr. and Mr. Alex Massey and the Brewerville Civic Association of North America was officially established with the expressed goal of encouraging and supporting development initiatives in the City of Brewerville. A year later, the association was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of Rhode Island. The first set of fund raisers (Friday, June 23rd and Saturday, June 24th) were held at the home of the late Mr. Moses K. Harris, 100 Bellevue Street in Providence. Rev. Napoleon Divine delivered the preached word during the first Memorial Service on Sunday, June 25th. The first core of elected officials were: Mr. Alexander M. Massey, National Executive Director, Mrs. Frances Hayes-Beyslow, Assistant Executive Director, Ms. Theodosia K. Banks, Director of Correspondence and Records, Mr. Alfred B.
