Alcuin College

As one of the smallest colleges, Alcuin offers a strong community feeling based on a backbone of proven supportive welfare structures. We have a large proportion of international students which allows for the making of many a useful global connection, whether for business or abusive 'couch-surfing'. Alcuin has a distinctive spirit which grows out o... f a supportive atmosphere and for enterprising students offers opportunities to achieve something outside of their studies which is of benefit to others. Location-wise it is ideally located near the chemistry department and medical school meaning you can literally roll out of bed into your lectures. Obviously this is not the attitude we wish to encourage and so I must hastily add that the library is only a stone's throw away offering many a quiet corner to delve into the deepest crevasses of academia. The Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) is an central part of Alcuin College and the collegiate system at the University of York. We are elected by the students of Alcuin and our job is to maintain and improve current welfare systems, college services, facilities and sport. We do this by organising a wide range of social events and gatherings. As well as this we work alongside the College staff, administrators and the Students Union, to help bring you the best possible experience at university. As a college, Alcuin has one of the largest and best organised welfare teams, with representatives for Male, Female, LGBT and International Students. All of these groups put on events in our Junior Common Room (JCR) each term, with the help of our Vice Chair Welfare and Support (a very important person). Welfare events include Movie Nights in the JCR with free pizza, weekend day trips to York and other cities and many others.
