Alberta's film, television and digital media industry is an environmentally friendly industry that supports rural economic development, promotes tourism, employs thousands of Albertans and brings diversity to Alberta's economy. This industry directly employs approximately 3,000 Albertans, with many more being impacted by production-induced spending... such as hotels, caterers and lumber companies. Development of the screen-based industries - film, television, digital - are part of the creative, knowledge-based economy for the province. This sector levers existing Alberta government investments in research and development; technology commercialization strategies; education, including Banff Centre, Alberta College of Art and Design, Olds College New Media Centre, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and our universities; rural capacity building; and the Supernet. A unique mix of expertise, locations and advantages help make Alberta a destination of choice for productions from around the world. Alberta is home to expert crews that have been nominated for more than 50 Academy Awards since 1948 and have received 22 Emmy Award wins out of more than 90 nominations, more than any other jurisdiction in Canada.
