We are a school that prepares our students for the future by helping them become active learners, responsible citizens and critical thinkers. We have some exciting things in place for the 2015-2016 school year to help us work toward that mission. Sanchez will be one of three elementary sites in the district to adopt the AVID (Advancement Via Indivi... dual Determination) philosophy and tools so that Sanchez students are prepared for college and other postsecondary opportunities. We will begin to implement WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies in the classrooms with a conscious effort to focus on high expectations and rigorous teaching methods. All of our fourth and fifth grade students will begin the year with binders and agendas to facilitate the use of different organizational and note taking tools. Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents, please make sure the agendas are signed nightly. Be prepared to hear about ways to encourage your child to have a growth mindset, an important component of AVID. Our students, staff and parents were excited to see the benefits of having PlayWorks on our playground last year. How does it work? Play Works staff work with schools to provide activities that offer play opportunities during recess and lunch..[2] They also train and help to run a variety of games, as well as teach techniques in group management, violence prevention and conflict resolution.[3]Our students have become more engaged in constructive play, learned to solve problems with minimal adult assistance, and had fewer behavioral issues during their recess times. We will continue to implement the program. Please let the fourth and fifth grade students know that they will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by applying and being selected to become a Junior PlayWorks Coach. Our PTA, with the leadership of our new PTA president Tina Loyacortes, has been working hard to prepare for an exciting year.
