Newton Township is located in the southwest portion of Calhoun County comprising some 35.9 square miles of land use with approximately 2500 residents. It lies immediately southeast of the City of Battle Creek, and just south of the I-94 transportation corridor. The two watersheds of the Kalamazoo River and the St. Joseph River drain the Township. Newton Township has three open water bodies. Lee Lake is the largest and most developed due to the recreation opportunities. Cotton Lake tends to be shallow and overgrown with emergent vegetation. The third is Hyde Lake which has experienced minor development pressure.
