Morrison was founded in 1948 at Tain in the Scottish Highlands. The family-run business grew steadily and, in the early 1970s, an 80 per cent equity stake in the business was sold to international conglomerate Chartered Consolidated. Morrison was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1995. The group consisted of a number of limited companies with approximately half of the £218m turnover generated by Morrison Construction Ltd. Morrison plc was bought by Anglian Water in 2000 and subsequently AWG plc was formed. By this stage Morrison Construction was generating approximately £500m turnover per annum with 60 per cent being in open partnering arrangements. Morrison Construction, part of Morrison Plc, was acquired by Galliford Try plc in April 2006.
