The Facts - The actual numbers of dogs euthanized each year in the United States is staggering. According to the most recent statistical information provided by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Pet Products Association (APPA), in 2015-2016 there were approximately 77.8 million pet dogs in the United States. That's an increase of over 4 million dogs in the last 12 years. Studies estimate that up to 4 million dogs are surrendered to animal shelters or humane organizations every year. Of those up to 4,000,000 unwanted dogs, approximately 35% are euthanized. That potentially means that over 1,200,000 (one million two hundred thousand!) dogs are euthanized in this country every year. We believe that percentage to be much, much higher. Up until the past few years, the only readily available option for dogs with unwanted behaviors was to either be surrendered to a shelter or to go through obedience training. After years of obedience training dogs for clients, we began to see clearly that obedience training does not necessarily fix behavior problems!
