Bridges to Independence is a grassroots nonprofit social service agency in operation since 2003. At Bridges we strive to be family and c... ommunity friendly, adhere to principals of harm reduction, and work toward economic and social justice for all. Bridges currently serves around 75 individuals, mainly adults with developmental disabilities. Our services include community supports, money management, group recreation, camping, art, vocational training, social sexual supports, LGBT program, health and nutrition, diabetes peer support, swimming, and more. In order to receive our services, a potential program participant needs to schedule an intake . Often the services can be paid for through Medicaid funds distributed by the brokerage system . Some participants use alternative funding sources such as Veterans Administration, DHS, Portland Public Schools, or private funds. While anyone can patronize our Turtle Town Cafe, our client programs require participants to sign up. At Bridges, services are person-centered and client-driven. This means that we strive to respect client choices around setting goals, determining services, and defining independence.
