What is UTEC?
Founded in 1999 by youth in Lowell, Massachusetts, UTEC is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering disengaged young people, aged 17-25, to transition from cycles of violence and poverty to social and economic success. UTEC's nationally recognized model begins with intensive street outreach and gang peacemaking, meeting young people where they are. The organization provides up to three years of intensive case management, alongside workforce training through its social enterprises within a transitional employment framework. UTEC also offers alternative education pathways, including GED preparation and alternative diploma programs. Social justice and civic engagement are core components of all programming, with a particular emphasis on local and statewide organizing and policymaking efforts. UTEC's primary outcomes focus on reducing criminal involvement, increasing employability, and enhancing educational attainment, with a demonstrated recidivism rate significantly lower than the statewide average.
