What is STAR School?
The STAR School is a charter elementary school dedicated to serving students from pre-school through grade 8 in the Southwest corner of the Navajo Nation and its surrounding rural areas. Established in August 2001 with an initial cohort of 23 students, the school has grown to accommodate a maximum of 130 students, emphasizing small class sizes for individualized attention. It aims to be a model for superior education in communities facing challenges such as limited job opportunities, lack of public utilities, high dropout rates, and historical governmental conflicts. The school's vision centers on fostering a joyful learning community that cultivates character, skills, and attitudes for self-understanding, balanced living, and community service. A strong emphasis is placed on commitments among administrators, teachers, students, and parents to achieve educational goals. Reflecting the intrinsic values of sustainable living within its community, STAR School promotes self-reliance, alternative building methods, and renewable energy sources like solar power, while also hosting workshops on sustainability, technology, and the arts.
