What is Openlands?
Openlands is dedicated to the preservation of open space and the restoration of natural areas throughout northeastern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, and southeastern Wisconsin. As an accredited land trust, the organization works collaboratively with various groups and individuals to develop walking and biking trails, and to foster a deeper connection between people and the natural environment. To date, Openlands has been instrumental in protecting and enhancing public access to over 55,000 acres, contributing to the establishment of parks, forest preserves, greenway corridors, and urban gardens within the greater Chicago area. Its affiliation with Chicago Wilderness further highlights its commitment to regional ecological health.
