What is Maitri?
Founded in February 1991 by a group of Indian women, Maitri emerged from a recognized need within the South Asian community for a confidential resource offering information, referrals, and peer counseling to women facing challenges. Recognizing that community members might hesitate to approach mainstream organizations, Maitri established a free, non-profit phone line staffed by trained volunteers. This initiative aimed to act as a crucial liaison, connecting women in need with legal, medical, financial, psychological, and employment services. The organization further expanded its mission in September 1999 by opening a low-cost transitional housing facility, addressing the critical shortage of affordable housing in the Bay Area and supporting women rebuilding their lives post-abuse.
