What is Homework Central?
Homework Central, established in 1998, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting at-risk elementary school children, primarily in Grades 3 through 5, who struggle with academic proficiency. Initially founded by members of several San Mateo churches to aid neighborhood children, the program has evolved to serve over 95% of students from economically challenged Hispanic families where Spanish is the predominant language. Operating across multiple after-school sites, Homework Central provides homework assistance and mentoring in a safe, welcoming environment, complemented by healthy snacks. The program leverages retired persons, working adults, and youth as volunteer tutors, ensuring personalized attention for students recommended by teachers for needing additional support to reach grade-level proficiency.
