What is Avda?
Founded in 1980 by the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Houston Section, AVDA began as a non-residential domestic violence center dedicated to providing essential resources and legal advocacy for thousands of battered women. Recognizing the critical need for rehabilitative services for perpetrators to break the cycle of abuse, AVDA expanded its offerings in 1984 by introducing the Battering Intervention and Prevention Program (BIPP). This program was the first of its kind in the state to achieve full accreditation, highlighting AVDA's pioneering role in comprehensive domestic violence intervention and prevention services.
