The Montana Department of Livestock serves as the lead agency in bison/brucellosis management for the State of Montana for activities occurring on the west boundary of Yellowstone National Park. This season from the west boundary, 12 bison have been transported to slaughter facilities; 8 bison were captured, tested negative for the disease of brucellosis and released on public land; and one bison that could not be moved back into the Park or captured was taken by lethal means. The Interagency Bison Management Plan was developed to reduce the risk of transmission of brucellosis from bison to cattle; protect private property; preserve a viable, wild population of Yellowstone bison; and maintain Montana's brucellosis-free status. The plan uses spatial and temporal management and states that all bison must be back in the Park by May 15. Current bison/brucellosis operations and other information is listed on the Montana Department of Livestock web page at www.liv.state.mt.us.
