Founded in 1802 by Thomas Jefferson, the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY is a highly selective school for army cadets and the oldest of the five service academies, located. To be considered for admission, candidates must obtain nominations from members of the federal government or those connected to the military. The academy offers nearly 40 majors and has more than 20 research centers. Students are encouraged to participate in conferences, pursue internships and study abroad; on average, 140 cadets study abroad each year in 13 different countries. Following graduation, cadets earn a bachelor of science degree and a commission in the U.S. Army as second lieutenants. Attendance is completely free of charge, and cadets receive a monthly stipend. Following graduation, alumni must serve five years of active duty in the Army, after which they may choose to continue or serve three years in the Inactive Ready Reserve. Cadets are required to participate in physical education classes as well as extracurricular sports, either varsity, club or intramural. USMA offers 28 varsity sports that compete in the NCAAs Division I, and the USMA Black Knights are known for their athletic rivalry with the U.S. Naval Academy, particularly in football. Among USMAs scores of notable alumni are presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Buzz Aldrin, astronaut and second man to walk on the moon, as well as the current Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.
