Zang Brewing

The Zang Brewing Company was founded in 1871 when Philip Zang, a Bavarian immigrant who turned to brewing beer after failing to find the mother lode in the gold fields of Colorado. Zang purchased the financially troubled Rocky Mountain Brewery which originally consisted of twenty buildings in 1871. Rumor has it that he obtained the brewery company... at a good price when a missing employee of the Rocky Mountain Brewery was found floating in one of the vats after a 30 day absence. Zang was able to take the failing business and turn it into a very successful company which at one time accounted for half of the beer production in the state of Colorado. The brewery remained in operation till the late 1940's when it was sold to a group of Denver businessmen. While beer was never actually brewed in this building, it was a legitimate part of the Zang Brewing Company complex. known for the longest time as the Rocky Mountain Hotel, and the Red Rabbit, the building was originally built to house the Teamsters who drove the beer wagons. The original twelve hotel rooms are still located on the second floor. The main dining area has been a restaurant and/or bar since 1871 giving it the distinction of being one of the oldest continuing bars in Denver. If the walls could talk, I'm sure many a story could be heard of the Hotel's illicit past as a speakeasy, brothel and gambling establishment. The property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. The restaurant is now owned by Rogelio Soto and Felipe Duran who own the El Señor Sol and Villa Del Sol restaurants in the area. Today Zang's is in the heart of it all. In close proximity are the Colorado Ocean Journey, Children's Museum and Elitch Garden's amusement Park - making Zang's an ideal spot for families.
