Winding Roofing Company is the oldest continuously operating roofing contractor in Wisconsin, having been established in 1873 by George Winding, a Danish immigrant. In 1892, George served as th... e president of the National Roofing Contractors Association. In more recent times, Fred Winding, Sr., grandson of George, led the company for many years. Fred was a member of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee for 64 years. He was past president of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, a director of the Better Business Bureau and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County. The Winding Family operated the company for nearly 100 years. In 1972, Fred retired and sold the company to the Schaefer Family. Under the leadership of president, Donald W. Schaefer, the company has continued its longstanding tradition of providing the same outstanding service and quality to businesses large and small. The company continues to be family-owned and operated. In 2005, Winding Roofing acquired W.J. Butzen Roofing & Sheet Metal, which was founded by William J. (Bill) Butzen in 1979.
