Wildwood Academy successfully educates children with Pervasive Development Disorders (PDD) by providing the most current and effective scientifically-validated programming. Through the use of Applied Behavioural Analysis and Verbal Behaviour strategies in our 1:1 program, Wildwood strives to provide all students with the academic and social skills needed to become active members of both the school environment and outside community. Wildwood Academy believes that all children can build their academic and social skills when educated within a structured program designed to meet their individual needs. Therefore, within our Intensive Support Program, all curriculum is tailored to suit each student. The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS) provides staff and parents with a precise measurement of a student's existing skills and isolates specific obstacles that prevent a student from learning. The ABLLS is also an instant tracking system, which measures learning achievements. On-going data collection allows teachers to effectively monitor a student's progress and structure lessons accordingly. Students are provided with a learning environment that targets specific language and skill deficits. Core language subjects are initially taught using Direct Instruction programs in a one to one or small group setting. Direct Instruction is a teacher-directed approach to learning pioneered in the 1960's by Siegfried Engelmann et al. Systematic lessons focus on modeling, repetition and review to ensure that all students attain mastery of skills taught. As children at Wildwood acquire the skills needed to engage in subject-specific larger group lessons, they are integrated into a classroom setting. An aid or shadow will provide additional support in the classroom as needed.
