Whitman-Walker is a collective of nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations based in Washington, D.C. that has served the local and national community for over fifty years, offering affirming community-based health and wellness services to all with a special expertise in LGBTQ and HIV care. Originally founded in 1973 as the Gay Men's VD Clinic operating ou... t of a Georgetown Lutheran Church basement and officially chartered in 1978, the organization is named for gay poet Walt Whitman and Civil War-era physician and women's rights activist Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Whitman-Walker operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center serving more than 20,000 patients and clients annually across multiple locations in Washington, D.C., including the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center in the Logan Circle neighborhood and the Max Robinson Center on the Saint Elizabeths East campus in Anacostia. The organization's comprehensive service portfolio includes primary medical care, dental care, behavioral health and mental health services, addictions treatment, HIV and STI testing and prevention, gender-affirming care, legal services, public benefits navigation, medical adherence case management, pharmacy services, youth programming, and women's health services, all delivered through a stigma-free, culturally competent care model. Whitman-Walker operates through several distinct entities including Whitman-Walker Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center providing direct clinical services; Whitman-Walker Institute, a research and policy organization focused on advancing health equity for LGBTQ people and people living with HIV through clinical expertise, research, education, and policy advocacy; and Whitman-Walker Foundation, which supports the organization's sustainability and growth through community-based philanthropy.
