In l946, Ward and Roma Walstrom and Paul Griffeth bought a 43-year-old boat yard in Harbor Springs from Henry Melching. There were 18 covered slips and storage for 100 boats The Chris Craft franchise went with the yard, which proved to be a valuable asset for many years. Another asset was an elevator lift that Henry Melching built in l938. Capable... of hauling 50 tons, it was one of the largest lifts in Northern Michigan. In l960, Walstrom Marine expanded east of town, developing a yacht basin for 100 slips, storage, service, and haul out. Addressing the need to haul and service larger yachts, Walstrom expanded to Cheboygan in l987. An 18,000 sq. ft. heated building, haul out slip with a 70-ton lift, and 40 deep-water slips were constructed on the Cheboygan River. When Bay Harbor was developed in 1995, Walstrom Marine became its first marina operator and opened a sales office and store. In 2009, Walstrom Marine converted its downtown building and 65 slips to a deposit membership club called The Boathouse of Harbor Springs. In 2011, a new 10,000 sq. ft. heated showroom with sales offices was built at 500 Bay Street. A fourth sales location was added in Traverse City in 2018 and another in Charlevoix that same year.
