Walnut Hill Farm

Walnut Hill Farm is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Northwest Georgia, just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. From the hilltops on the 85-acre property, panoramic vistas of the mountains may be enjoyed both to the East and the West. Offering spectacular sunrise and sunset views, it was this setting that Nanette and Joe select... ed to establish their home in late 1993. Magnificent hardwoods graced the rolling hillsides and empty pastures overlooked a small, unassuming pond. Mother Nature had indeed made a grand start with the land. A certified Master Gardener, Nanette has since graced the grounds with gardens and orchards, walking paths, a picnic pavilion, and quiet sitting retreats. Joe, an engineer, has spent his entire 30-year career in carpet manufacturing. Along with Nanette, he developed an overall plan for the complex, designed all the buildings and oversaw their construction. Blending architectural style and the natural flow of the landscape, the plot of land soon became Walnut Hill Farm. The farm takes its name from a stand of black walnut trees atop a hill overlooking the pastures and pond. We wanted to do something with the property that included alternative livestock. We had heard that llamas, with their light-footed step and grazing habits, were very kind to the land. Having seen a llama event at a state fair, Nanette fell in love with their gentleness and was equally impressed with their cleanliness and intelligence. So now, despite their South American roots, the long-necked camelids prance across the pastures of Walnut Hill Farm as if they had always been there. These creatures are well known for their docile behavior and interact well with people of all ages, especially children. In fact, our grandchildren will help raise them and exhibit them in show competition. We wanted a business the whole family could enjoy and become involved with.
