About Visual Aid

Visual Aid encourages artists with life-threatening illnesses to continue their creative work. Visual Aid Projects - For 25 years, Visual Aid has been an integral part of San Franciscos passionate social activism in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, supporting the creative production of artists with AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. Today, volunteers are working on selected curatorial projects and the Visual Aid Archives, organizing material compiled throughout the organization's history. Holdings include thousands of slides, photographs, sound and video recordings, printed material and ephemera, including images of artwork, catalogs and documentation of significant exhibitions and fundraisers, which include work by thousands of artists. Important highlights documenting artists responses to the AIDS pandemic include unique interviews and files of material on artists who passed away before the proliferation of electronic media.
