Viridans

Viridans is a leader in the provision of accurate and authoritative information on the distribution, morphology, taxonomy and conservation status of plants and animals that live and breed in the wild in south-eastern Australia. The company was established in December 1990 when we began development of the Victorian Flora Information System (FIS) ser... ies of botanical databases. These databases were the first to allow a user to employ interactive maps to find all plants in a specified area, to display colour images and descriptions of each species and plot any one of them on state-wide or regional maps. Initially these databases were written for the sole use of the botanical survey team within the Department of Conservation and Environment (DCE) but over time they became the principal source of information on plants for a much wider range of users, inside and outside of government. Since 1996 Viridans software has been the standard platform for the display, dissemination and exchange of botanical and zoological data within Victorian government agencies and between those agencies and environmental consultancies. Viridans packages are used in education, research, flora and fauna management and conservation as well as reference works for amateur and professional natural historians.
