Founded in 1969 by several faith-based groups and a handful of dedicated volunteers, our United Community has grown from a small grassroots effort to what is now the leading human services non-profit agency in southeastern Fairfax County. The area we serve (the Route 1 Corridor) has a high concentration of affordable housing, but few amenities, features, or supports to help residents especially low-income and residents of color to improve their quality of life. For the 96% of white residents living along the Potomac River, there is a zero poverty rate. While across the highway where 70% of residents are Hispanic and African American there is an overall poverty rate of nearly 20%. 1.
