He joined British Gas North Western in 1980 as a Gas Engineering Technical Apprentice and after completing the 4 year course held several positions in the Regional Service Department both in the domestic but specialising in the non-domestic market. He left the region in 1993 and joined the Emergency and Meterwork Project.
