About Troop 228

Troop 228 has roughly 60-70 registered scouts. This boy-led troop empowers boys to be leaders by allowing them to develop a troop program and then take responsibility for figuring out how to achieve their goals. The Troop meets at Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park, PA. every Tuesday night from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. Scouts who arrive early at 7:00 p.m. will find leaders and older Scouts available to help them with advancement. Our Troop plans a camp out each month. These have included cycling trips along The Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath, Ski Trips to Timberline Resort in West Virginia, Backpacking in the Laurel Highlands, Canoeing and Kayaking the Youghiogheny and Allegheny Rivers. For many years, the Troop has had unlimited access to a small farm south of Washington, PA, just off the Ruff Creek exit on Interstate 79. Known to us as the "Thunderbird Proving Ground", we have erected a large cabin with a fireplace and 2 adirondacks. We camp here at least 2-3 times per year. We also attend Conestoga District Klondike Derby and other Camp-o-rees. In the spring the Troop takes an extended three-day educational trip. Recent visits have been to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio; Gettysburg Battleground; Old Fort Niagara, Niagara Falls; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, PA; Louisville, KY; and Annapolis, MD. The objective is to provide a unique learning experience, which brings the history and greatness of our country closer to each Scout.
