Trading Standards Wales

Trading Standards Wales (TSW) represents the 20 Local Authority Trading Standards services across Wales. We share information and awareness campaigns across the nation to protect consumers and safeguard legitimate business. The benefits of working together and co-ordination across the region includes raising the profile of Trading Standards. TSW co... ordinates advice and enforcement of laws that govern the way goods and services are sold, rented and hired to consumers. Local Trading Standards officers carry out inspections and monitor or investigate complaints. We endeavour to work with businesses to help achieve compliance but ultimately, we can prosecute those who break the law. Together, TSW tackles a wide range of issues including; product safety, doorstep crime and scams, underage sales, counterfeit goods and unfair trading as well as food standards and animal feed legislation. In 2020-21 our work took a dramatic shift towards enforcement of emergency legislation in response to the serious and imminent threat to public health posed by COVID-19. Trading Standards Wales has worked to support local Trading Standards in the enforcement of local business restrictions and closures during the lockdown periods through supporting and representing local authorities in discussions with government and trade bodies on a plethora of matters, including scams and travel and event cancellations whilst ensuring at the same time that unsafe PPE and sub-standard sanitisers are not being placed on the market. Leaving the EU has also impacted on the professions work with product safety, food labelling and other rules being affected, with Trading Standards demonstrating its adaptability by producing appropriate and timely business advice and guidance.
