At Tombolo Academy we seek to cultivate a fresh look at invention, entrepreneurship and risk taking in all its forms. We believe that by creating an arena where positive, active, engaged participation is celebrated and encouraged, students with disabilities and gifted abilities are able to become more active directors of their lives. The school pro... vides a curriculum which is strength based and differentiated according to each individuals abilities. The weakness that causes the student difficulties is accommodated and negated as much as possible. This occurs through the intentional use of appropriate technology, hands on learning, movement, individual assignments, negotiated individual Epic Plans (EP) and specific focused case management with appropriate intervention. The strength is used to scaffold learning, leadership and emotional development. Class tasks are at each students zone of proximal development. Tombolo Academys Epic Plan (EP) process is unique and comprehensive. It is controlled first and foremost by the students themselves. Students at Tombolo Academy are empowered to make their own choices about how and when they work towards each of their learning goals, and how they will demonstrate their learning. In order to accommodate the twice-exceptional students need for time to focus, research, development of ideas and thoughts, the EP created and subsequently the negotiated Story Map ensures adequate time is provided in a week for such events. Staff at Tombolo Academy are determined to teach the students to a level that allows entry to offered year 11 and 12 programs. This could be TAFE, VCE, VET, VCAL, IB or overseas, online or other courses. The academic result imagined are a focus of the older students. The students are all introduced to an array of learning and work opportunities throughout their time at Tombolo Academy.
